The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) is hosting its Responsible Sourcing Committee meeting on July 31, 2019, the day before The ELEVATE Leadership Series 2019 in NYC. It’s a yearly tradition to leverage the benefits of this meeting and the Leadership Series. All retailers are welcome to attend the RILA meeting to share leading practices for managing responsible sourcing, and to network with peers. Drawing from his forthcoming book The Myth of Chinese Capitalism: the Worker, the Factory, and the Future of the World, Dexter Roberts will speak about how demography, growing income inequality, and unfinished reforms present huge obstacles to China’s continued economic development and could lock its huge migrant workforce into permanent second-class status. Plans to move from Factory of the World, to a more consumption-driven, value-added producer of world-class technology could derail, as workers push back and opposition grows overseas to China’s state capitalism.

We have very little visibility in the West over the reality on the ground for these workers and at times it can be difficult to comprehend the circumstances they are working under and what difference we can make.  But there is space to contribute to an equilibrium change, by supporting building resilience amongst those working at the frontlines for accountability and actual implementation of the rights and entitlements agreed on paper.

Deep in the supply chains of leading multinational companies, innovative and collaborative work is being done to finance and implement projects that help solve industry-wide problems. This afternoon session explores the benefits and challenges associated with multi-stakeholder collaboration and participation, and what we might learn about improving responsible sourcing program approach and effectiveness.

Brands and retailers have been shifting sourcing away from China but the USA-China trade war has increased challenges for responsible sourcing in the region. In this session we will speak to the risks businesses are facing with respect to the rise of subcontracting, increasing unknowns when sourcing from a new country, including monitoring compliance to migrant worker policies and fire and building safety.
