Sunil Rao

Sunil is an internationally recognised expert business and human rights lawyer, with a particular focus on modern slavery. Previously, as Special Counsel at Baker McKenzie, Sunil advised Australian and foreign business on Australia’s Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth). This involved legislative compliance as well as governance, risk mitigation and remediation in local and complex global supply chains across diverse sectors, including manufacturing, construction, retail, utilities, agriculture, health, banking, and finance. More recently, Sunil designed and implemented a state-based strategy for the Victorian Government to reduce the risk of modern slavery practices in health sector supply chains.

Sunil is a leading author in business and human rights and recipient of multiple awards for his research and innovation in this field. Sunil holds distinguished appointments at the national and international levels, including appointment to Australian Government Modern Slavery Expert Advisory Group, Law Council of Australia Business and Human Rights Committee and Australian Universities Modern Slavery Program Advisory Board.

Sunil holds a Bachelor of Arts/Law and a Master of Laws from Monash University and his currently completing a PhD in business and human rights.
